Dahi Handi Big
Description
The Dahi Handi is a clay pot that plays a central part in a popular Indian festival. Traditionally, a round or cylindrical clay pot stands approximately three to four feet tall and is filled with yogurt, butter, and other milk products—a symbol of prosperity and abundance. This “handi” (pot) is suspended high in the air by a rope or string, and becoming a focal point in the festivities. Teams of young men create human pyramids in an enthusiastic attempt to reach the top and break the dahi handi, spilling its contents. Made by skilled potters and decorated with bright colors and designs, these clay Dahi Handis bring festivity and fervor to the celebration. The breaking of the handi signifies victory and achievment. Both fun and competitive, the Dahi Handi pot and its place in the festivities capture the lively spirit of Indian culture.
